black fluid under car. Not oil. Has a sweetish taste. First guess is manual transmission fluid.

Something that you probably shouldn't drink.

Which car, the vert or the wagon?

Sweetish taste usually implies a glycol of some kind. Brake fluid and antifreeze are the big ones, but I think some PS setups use a glycol as well. Most transmission fluids are (broadly) still oils, not a polar substance like a glycol.

My guess is power steering fluid.

Gear oil smells terrible. I'd guess some brake fluid or nasty-ass coolant.

brake fluid he would have known it. DOT3/4 you cannot even taste it is so bitter and tongue wrenching

trans fluid should be pinkish or dark brown.

Coolant is typically green or orange.

Brake fluid would be dark.

Take a lot of newspaper, and shove it under the car. It'll help you determine location and fluid. Pick a few pages of more text and less ads. I've used pizza boxes before if they aren't too greasy.

not brake fluid, he wouldn't even be able to taste it it is so bitter. Prob nasty ass coolant, that is all I can think of that tastes sweet

Drying is the term I typically use, but it's definitely bitter. Does it get less bitter if it's been decaying and absorbing water for years? Somewhat, but that would have to be some legendarily dead/bad fluid for him not to notice, probably. Leaning PS on this, but it's gonna be hard to pin down. Black+sweet = I think he has a bad molasses line.

stop ingesting random fluids that are on the ground under your car

Want to hear something you don't, um, want to hear? It could be coolant mixed with oil...i.e. blown HG.

shoot I want a bad molasses line. Haha yeah possibly PS, especially if mineral based. Doesn't mention what kind of car but Mercedes SLS systems use some seriously inert tasting mineral oil as the fluid.

My W124 uses a PS fluid more or less indistinguishable from ATF, so that's what it's been topped up with.

the w123 was clear as anything. Did they really change it?

Ah wait you must mean the P/S and not the Self Leveling Suspension. Yeah the p/s is close to ATF for sure

I seem to recall Citroens use an ester or glycol in their hydropneumatics. I suspect that's not what he has, though. Call it a hunch.

lol I am sure that is not what is at play. The early cars used glorified brake fluid that was slightly thicker, but just as water absorbent. then they switched to mineral based that was dyed green, because Citroen, around the time the spheres were painted green as well. Early systems required a flush very often
